The Afroton Berimbau from Thomann delivers a decent introduction to this iconic Brazilian instrument, but falls short in a few key areas considering its price point.
Build & Materials
While the berimbau itself has a nice finish and produces the characteristic twang expected of a traditional berimbau, the calabash (resonator) is disappointingly fragile. Mine cracked with minimal use, which is frustrating given that it’s a vital part of the instrument’s tone.
Value for Money
At this price, the set consisting of the wooden bow, wire, baqueta (stick), and a caxixi, the cost feels on the high side. My gourd cracked after 3 weeks.
Sound & Playability
When intact (or repaired), the berimbau produces a good range of tones and is responsive.
Verdict
A decent starter instrument, but overpriced for what you get. If you're serious about capoeira or traditional Brazilian music, you might want to explore more authentic or durable options.
