Cranborne Audio 500R8

My first dive into the world of 500 series equipment - I have both the R8 and ADAT units giving me 16 ins and outs via any 500 series module chain. This R8 lets you customise your channel strips into the computer and also lets you use them again when mixing from your DAW. Really good monitoring options and lots of useful knobs on the front panels regards blending levels, talk-back and signal routing options. It is an expensive unit but quality and functionality are high. The highlight for me is the ability to "chain" together as many 500 modules as you like without the need for any re-patching or connecting extra cables - and all from the R8s' front panel switches !!!

I was excited for this product, like a lot of people I wanted to make it the centre of my studio, but when it arrived it had multiple bugs and software issues, I updated the firmware, no fix,I reached out to Thomann and they could not figure the issues, I contacted Cranborne and no response.

Ultimately I returned the item, as I previously bought their camden 500 preamp unit and it started producing signal noise after a few weeks I was concerned they may have some production issues.

Two weeks later Cranborne responded to my support email but I informed them “sorry but I had to return the item”,below is their word for word response:

“Sorry to hear that but probably for the best. Thanks so much for giving our products a "try".”

Cranborne have some good ideas, and clearly put a lot into marketing but I’m leaving this review to let people know the experience once you’ve put your money down is not so rosey. I don’t want to speak ill of a new company trying new ideas, but the two Cranborne units I have bought they both produced good audio when they worked, neither worked consistently. I wish them well going forward and hope things become more consistent, but I won’t be buying Cranborne again.

Das Teil überzeugt mich durch sehr gute Audio-Qualität und eine gute Verarbeitung. Es verblüfft durch seine wirklich vielfältigen Möglichkeiten, die sich bei der Verbindung von DAW und analoger Hardware ergeben. Erstaunlich, was alles durch die Verknüpfung von acht 500er Steckplätzen/Modulen, einem integriertem 8 IN/OUT Audio-Interface und einem analogen 8-kanaligen Summierer für Ideen und Möglichkeiten entstehen. Durch die zusätzlichen Hardware-Inserts (Stereo-Klinke) können weitere analoge Gerätschaften ohne oder auch gemeinsam mit 500er Modulen in die 8 Kanäle eingebunden werden. Durch die unterschiedlichsten Routing-Möglichkeiten kommt noch mehr Würze ins Spiel. Beim Aufnehmen, beim Arrangieren/Abmischen und beim finalen Mixdown bietet mir der Cranborne 500R8 einerseits simple und intuitive analoge Bedienung aber bei Bedarf kann ich auch richtig experimentieren. Ganz einfach finde ich beispielsweise die Nutzung von 500er Modulen beim Aufnehmen vor der A-D-Wandlung oder auch als "analoge PlugIns" beim Mischen/Arrangieren in den DAW-Spuren und Bussen. Ganz schön abgefahren kann ich aber auch verschiedene 500er Module/Slots hintereinander und parallel benutzen. Macht Laune und bringt neue Ideen ins Spiel.

Was mir sehr gut gefällt ist die ausschließlich analoge Bedienung und Konfiguration des Cranborne. Es ist tatsächlich keine Software nötig und es gibt auch keine! Per USB an den Mac und los gehts. Pur analog rein und raus geht natürlich auch, aber dann täten es auch andere günstigere Modulträger ohne integriertes Audio-Interface. Der Cranborne macht nur in einem hybriden Setup (DAW + analoge 500er Module) Sinn.

Gutes Audio-Interface, praktikables Monitoring für 2 Abhören und zwei getrennt regelbare Kopfhöreranschlüsse. Latenzfreies analoges Aufnahme-Monitoring und eine Talkback-Funktion mit eigenem Mikrofonanschluss ist auch dabei. 2 ADAT IN und 2 ADAT out ermöglichen mir weitere 16 IN und OUT mit beliebigen ADAT-fähigen Geräten. Und dann sind da ja auch noch die Möglichkeiten mit der analogen C.A.S.T. Schnittstelle, für die ich bisher aber noch keinen Bedarf hatte.

Der erstmal doch etwas hoch anmutende Preis sollte nicht gleich abschrecken. Ich meine er ist aufgrund der durch das integrierte USB Audio-Interface gebotenen Möglichkeiten gerechtfertigt. Wenn man alle 8 Slots mit hochwertigen Modulen bestücken will, dann braucht man natürlich auch noch mal entsprechende Finanzmittel. Wenn man noch keine 500er Module im Schrank hat, dann sollte man die Investitionen dafür gleich mit einkalkulieren. Allerdings auch ohne 500er Module ist das Gerät als 8 Kanal Audio-Interface mit einem Insert pro Kanal und Monitorsektion oder als analoger 8 Kanal Summierer zu betreiben. Die Modul-Slots können auf Bypass geschaltet werden. Macht aber nicht ganz so viel Spaß.

Na trhu není moc zařízení umožňující hybridní práci DAW a analogu, Co vím tak je v současné době k dispozici Soundcraft Signature MTK, SSL Big Six a Cranborne Audio 500R8... Při snaze posunout mé domácí studio kvalitativně trochu dál jsem samozřejmě vybíral ze třech uvedených. První dva bohužel vykazují technické vady plynoucí z mizerné kvality výroby a nebo špatného technického návrhu. 500R8 je sice konstrukčně jinde než dva předchozí, výsledná práce je ovšem podobná. Velice mě překvapila promyšlenost celého návrhu, možnosti kombinací, kvalita převodníků, kvalita zpracování, možnosti které konkurence vůbec nemá (routování signálu, talkback, CA.S.T). Co se týče kvality zvuku, nemá konkurenci, dál není nutné to komentovat. USB řadič je XMOS a tedy se logicky nabízí použít ovladače od firmy Thesycon, které jsou samy o sobě zárukou kvalitního přenosu signálu na disk. Převodníky Cirrus Logic jsou naprosto famózní a kvalitou směle předčí převodníky Burr Brown v mé Audient iD22. u USB bych ještě rád vypíchl detail. V době, kdy se všichni výrobci snaží být moderní a dávají na audiointerface USB-C konektory protože to je "konektor budoucnosti" tak nikdo se asi nezamyslel na tím, že jde o zvukové zařízení a že pro seriozní práci je třeba nít co nejkvalitnější usb kabel. ty jsou logicky k dispozici pro hifitrh jako kabely pro DA konvertory. a ty jsou ve specifikaci USB2.0 (koncekonců i uvedený USB-C konektor na audiointerface je vždy ve specifikaci USB2.0, tekže to nemá naprosto žádný význam). Zde bych chtěl zmínit že 500R8 má starý dobrý USB B 2.0 konektor, umožňující použití kvalitnějších usb kabelů, než je kabel pro nabíjení telefonu... Jedinou výtku bych měl k pan potenciometrům na sumačním pultu. Jedná se o plastové potenciometry bez řádného uložení hřídele, takže mají znatelný "vakl". nemá to ovšem vliv na zvuk. jen z toho nemám pocit dokonalosti. Upozorňuji, že SPDIF vstup a výstup není u verze firmvaru 0.95 k dispozici a je tedy nutné ihned provést upgrade firmwaru (aktuálně 1.3) a ovladače. Je to ovšem racková mašina nacpaná po strop funkcemi takže ovládání nemusí být tak intuitivní jako u konkurentů, kteří jsou postavené jako mixážní pulty. úspora pracovního místa u racku může být ale další výhodou. Za mě nejlepší nákup pro domácí studio. Koupil bych to znovu.
