SKB R3U Roto Rack

The SKB R3U Roto Rack is a solid, well-built rack case that offers the durability and protection I'd expect from SKB. However, there are two things that disappointed me. First, on all three Roto Rack cases I purchased, the top and bottom sections of the front and rear rack frame are slightly bowed. It doesn't prevent the equipment from being installed, but for a premium product, I expected better manufacturing tolerances. The bigger disappointment is the included hardware. Even though the case has rack rails at both the front and the rear, SKB only includes enough rack screws for one side. If you want to use both sets of rails—which is one of the reasons to buy this type of case—you have to purchase another complete set of screws. The problem is that these screws are not easy to find in Europe, so after spending around €300 on the rack case, I had to spend another €25 just to get the hardware needed to use all of its mounting points. Overall, the case itself is excellent, but SKB should include enough mounting screws for both the front and rear rails, especially at this price point.

Wir haben SKB Cases auf Grund ihres moderaten Gewichts und ihrer guten Stabilität seit Jahrzehnten bei Equipment mit geringer Einbautiefe (Funkstrecken, Pre-Amps, digitale Stageboxen, AES/ADAT-Wandler, DI-Boxen, Stromverteiler, usw.) im Einsatz. Das spricht hinsichtlich der Zufriedenheit für sich selbst.

Die neuen Shallow Cases weisen gegenüber den Cases der vorherigen Generation nun einige deutliche Weiterentwicklungen und Verbesserungen auf, die ich bei den alten Shallow Cases (zum Teil schmerzlich) vermißt habe.

PRO:
+ endlich, endlich sind die Cases "echte" Double-Door-Cases, die frühere unzureichende - instabile und zu klein geratene - "Service"-Klappe auf der Rückseite habe ich regelmäßig verflucht, endlich ist sie entfallen. Bestens.
+ Rackschienen sind nun auf Vorder- UND Rückseite, wie oft habe ich das vermißt. Sehr gut.
+ Griffe nun auf BEIDEN Seiten. Gut.
+ Griffe und Schlösser sind eingelegt, dadurch ist ebene Standfläche jetzt auf ALLEN Seiten des Cases möglich. Gut.
+ die Einbautiefe ist mit 27,5 cm nun rund 2 cm tiefer, das ist häufig praxisgerechter und damit gut.
+ durch die neue Formgebung ist die Stapelfähigkeit und -sicherheit wesentlich verbessert worden, gestapelte Cases sind jetzt völlig unverrückbar und stehen wie aus einem Guß. Sehr gut.

CONTRA:
- nach wie vor sind die mitgelieferten Rackschrauben sehr filigran: Schaftdurchmesser 4,7 mm, Kopfdurchmesser 9,2 mm. Bei den Rackohren mancher Geräte greifen die kleinen Schraubenköpfe lediglich gerade noch deren Rand. Das macht keinen Vertrauen erweckenden Eindruck und hier müssen nach meiner Auffassung von Stabilität oft zusätzlich breite Unterlegscheiben verwendet werden. Das gibt leider immer noch einen Punkt Abzug. Schade.
