Good potential but flawed

I was excited for the launch of the new ST-80FR models, particularly the single pickup version. Not many companies offer the sparkle finish, roasted maple neck, stainless steel frets and Floyd Rose 1000 for this money.

First the good bits: the neck feels smooth in the hand, the body is finished well, cavities are shielded, the Floyd Rose feels solid and the pickup is fine.

Unfortunately, on the model I received, the tuning machines are garbage, they feel really poor quality and the tuner for the second string won't turn. The main problem is the frets, or more specifically the fret ends... they are cut too short! There are noticeable gaps between the end of the fret and the end of the fretboard and I can only assume that the frets are cut to a certain length and then installed rather than the other way round. Whilst the fret ends are really smooth, the fretboard just looks amateurish. A fair number of frets are also uneven and need to be levelled.

I have always been open to trying Harley Benton guitars in the past and I have been lucky to receive a couple of solid instruments for not much money in the past. This example, however, shows that guitars at this price are also a bit of a gamble. This is a shame as these models offer a lot of potential. It also makes you question what kind of quality control is taking place as a guitar with short frets should never leave the factory let alone be sold in the store.

Gelungene Hommage an die 80er

Ich spiele die Gitarre nun seit knapp einem Monat und habe sie ganz bewusst als Bastelobjekt gekauft. „Pimp my Axe“ sozusagen, um in der Zeit zu bleiben.

Nachdem sie bei mir ankam, habe ich allerdings erst einmal überlegt, ob ich den Umbau überhaupt wirklich angehen soll. Optisch und technisch war sie in sich so stimmig, dass sie eigentlich keiner Nachbesserung bedurft hätte. Der Pickup ist heiß, aber transparent, das Floyd tut, was es soll, und die Tuner halten, was sie versprechen.

Und das war es dann im Grunde auch schon bei dieser Gitarre: Minimalismus pur.

Ich habe sie nun trotzdem zu der Gitarre umgebaut, die ich in den 80ern gespielt hätte, und bin auch damit sehr glücklich. So oder so, mit beiden Varianten wäre ich jederzeit auf die Bühne gegangen und hätte das Helden-Solo angestimmt.

Gitara została dostarczona z zerwaną struną e1, poluzowaną blokadą strun, co spowodowało rozstrojenie mosta Floyd rose. Gryf gitary nie był ustawiony w osi. Gitara musiała od razu trafić do lutnika. Oczywiście mogłem odesłać, ale nie było na to czasu bo była prezentem urodzinowym. W serwisie udało ustawić się wszystko ok. Wkręty na grzebieniu Floyd rose są wkręcone do samego końca, na styk. Progi dobrze nabite, równe, można ustawić niską akcję strun. Progi są słabo wypolerowane a końcówki za krótkie. Nie dochodzą do końca krawędzi. Sprawia to wrażenie, że albo gryf jest za wąski albo mostek za szeroki. Czasami struna e1 potrafi ześlizgnąć się. Lakier na korpusie położony bardzo dobrze, bardzo ładny. Gryf bardzo gruby, ale wygodny. Takiego grubego jeszcze nie widziałem. Brzmienie fajnie, ostre, przetwornik około 14 kiloomów jest wystarczający. Ogólnie średnia gitara. Na duży plus to sam most Floyd rose.
