Krivo Pickup for Upright Bass

If what you are looking for is the NHOP sound, that you slap the bass, that you play at very loud volumes, that you are using effect pedals with your upright or that you want a simple solution for any setting to amplify your Upright with, this is what you are looking for!

it's extremely easy to put on the bass and setup, it comes bundled with everything you need witch is great!

the build quality seems good, the jack insert feels pretty solid!

Aesthetically it doesn't impact the look of the bass that much, it's pretty discret if that is important to you.

For the sound, it's a magnetic pickup, so it is very precise, but you'r upright bass will sound more like an electric bass. That aside it's a very nice pickup, it's warm and precise!

Talking about precision it's great for using using effect pedals! Some effects that were once unusable now sound great with the upright! (boss Oc2...)

Finally If you play at loud volumes, you will have less problems with feedback compared to a piezo!

To summarise it's a great product, discret, sturdy, easy to mount, with a great sound!

As a multi-instrumentaiste specialising in both open microphone and fully electric performance and studio environments The Krivo satisfies the first need of any Double Bass player... No feedback, and crystal clear signal response.

It's true that the sound transforms the Upright more towards the direction of a bass guitar in terms of sound, but this idiosyncrasy is only what you'd expect while using a humbucker instead of a piezo, or microphone system.

In the mix - even with precision bluegrass, the bass remains transparent and organic. In the studio The Krivo performs well for the same reasons. When mixed in place, the ear doesn't notice the difference.

In the bars and for noisy events, there is no better solution.

Das Einzige, was ich wirklich gut finde, ist die Anbringung. Schade eigentlich. Die Idee des Pickups ist soweit gut.
Das für einen derartig hohen Preis ein Inbus-Schlüssel beiliegt, der zu klein ist, wundert mich doch sehr. Eine solche Fahrlässigkeit ist schon ärgerlich. Glücklicherweise hatte ich noch einen Inbus zu liegen.

Zum Sound:
Der ist soweit gut. Bassig, wie er soll und gerade die D und G Saite klingen gut und prägnant.
...aber eben auch nur die beiden.
Bei der E und A Saite ist ein sehr starker Lautstärkeunterschied festzustellen, den ich auch durch Hochdrehen der Polschrauben nicht beheben konnte.
Ein direkter Vergleich mit meinem Schaller 411 Magnet Pickup (und 2023 auch mit einem handgemachten Zadow Magnet Pickup) offenbarte den ganzen Unterschied. Hier klangen bei beiden PUs, Schaller und Zadow, alle Saiten ausgewogen, klar, druckvoll und vor Allem.....wesentlich lauter und präsent.
Ein Test mit Probeaufnahmen bestätigte den Eindruck.

Verarbeitung:
Um es kurz zu machen....für solche Bohrlöcher hätte ich in meiner Lehrzeit eine Ohrfeige (verdient) gefangen.

Fazit:
Im direkten A/B Vergleich mit dem Schaller 411 und dem Zadow Bass Pickup verliert der Krivo deutlich. Bei Schaller und Zadow wurde sauber gearbeitet, was bei dem teuren Krivo schmerzlich vernachlässigt wurde.
Der Krivo klingt unausgewogen und das ließ sich (zumindest bei mir) nicht beheben. Die D und G Saite klingen gut und genauso wie man es möchte, die E und A Saiten hingegen, mumpfig und dumpf.

Getestet wurde:
Krivo Pickup vs Schaller 411 und Zadow (alle magnetische Tonabnehmer für Kontrabass)
Halbmassiver Bass, Thomastik Superflexible Stahlsaiten und Presto Nylonwound Light Saiten.
Amps:
Fender Rumble 800 mit einer 1x12 und einer 2x8 Box
Eich Amps T1000 mit 1x12 xs und 2x10xs Boxen.
Recording: Cubase 12 Pro über Presonus Studio Live 12 AR Pult

Somit leider absolut nicht empfehlenswert.
