Evh MIJ Series EVH Wolfgang IY

After a lengthy wait to get my hands on this, I'm really impressed. I'd tried one of the USA-made Wolfgangs before and loved it. This surprised me as it had specs that I don't often favour (Fender nut-width, vintage frets, very hot pickups, and the price was above my usual sweet spot of around €1000). But when I found out that a MiJ model with a far more realistic price point was coming (and wanting a do-it-all guitar for demos and teaching), I put in for a pre-order.

It was worth the wait! A very lightweight, compact body that just gets out of your way, an almost raw-feeling maple neck, a thick slab of smooth ebony for the fretboard, cleanly-processed stainless steel frets, fantastic grit and harmonics from the rather spicy pickups, the low-friction volume control that I have come to prefer from playing my Charvels, a decent-quality hardshell case. It's all gravy.

I don't envisage using the kill switch a great deal, but this is the first guitar I've had with one. The D-Tuna is super handy for easily swapping to a drop tuning. The bridge was properly intonated out of the case, but you may need to adjust the tiny screw to balance between drop and standard when using it (I've seen people whine about them not working, but it takes all of 30 seconds to set up).

Downsides? The strap that came with it was nylon rather than the USA model's leather (and is too long for me even on the shortest setting, and I'm 180cm). It's not a huge issue as I put the same DiMarzio Clip-Loc cotton straps on all of my guitars. I'd also like a third spring in the back, but we'll see how it feels when I restring with my usual 8-42s. A trem spring isn't exactly a huge expense.

Overall, I'm super happy with it. I think Fender made a goof with the price point (considering you could get one of each colour for less than the price of one USA model), but I'm not going to complain. I wouldn't be surprised if these got revised to €2500 each, so get your order in now and try to stay calm while you wait.

Après ça vaut la peine, c’est une belle guitare, qui sonne super bien déjà à vide, une fois branchée les micros font vraiment le Job et cette guitare est largement aussi polyvalente qu’une Les Paul, avec même une certaine modernité en plus!
Je possède une Peavey Wolfgang Américaine et une MusicMan EVH.
Au niveau forme on est plus proche de la Peavey, les micros sonnent à mon goût mieux. La beauté des bois ne sont pas les mêmes…Manche plus fin et aussi large sur l’EVH Mij série.
La MusicMan n’a rien à voir, pas la même ergonomie, pas les mêmes types de manche du tout, et pas les mêmes bois non plus…
Sinon dans l’annonce on nous vend une sangle EVH en cuire, j’ai reçu une sangle nylon, pas le même prix… en plus beaucoup trop grande pour moi, donc inutilisable. Le système de crochet est sympa sur le papier, en vrai ça risque sans arrêt de cogner sur les côtés de la guitare et par conséquent la rendre « relic », donc j’investirai dans un autre système pour mettre une sangle sur cette guitare, parce qu’il n’y rien d’autre de livré en avec la guitare… des attaches sangle chromées tout bêtes auraient été les bienvenues.
A noté également pas de certificat ou papier de suivis de contrôle de fabrication… l’étui est adapté à la guitare et pas un autre modèle, il remplit son rôle.
Après les frettes inox, sont confortable et bien ajustés, les finitions sont belles.
La guitare mérite un réglage pour être vraiment réglée au top. Forcément elle n’est pas réglée par Thomann, avant d’être envoyé (d’où le prix bas aussi…)
J’ai fais part de ces légers points de déception concernant la sangle qui n’est pas celle promise sans aucuns retour de leurs part…
Je pense que la qualité Made In Japan est au rendez-vous, je suis un guitariste exigent, mais je n’aurais pas payé plus pour un modèle Made In USA.

Ik heb een Music Man Axis die kwalitatief goed is en lekker speelt. De EVH WG leek me een prima keuze en in Ivory ziet hij er geweldig uit. De Japanse versie waar het hier om gaat wordt geprezen en zou niet onder moeten doen voor de duurdere VS variant.

De wachttijd van bijna een jaar is belachelijk, maar goed. Eenmaal binnen viel me op dat de gitaar slecht was afgesteld. Ik heb shims moeten verwijderen van onder de lock nut, de hals moeten stellen en de hoogte van de brug. Daarna was de afstelling goed, maar ik weet niet of een doorsnee klant dat had kunnen doen. De FR brug lijkt een verbogen rand te hebben waar de fine tuners zitten, maar hindert niet de werking. Zal de brug later toch vervangen voor een Duitse FR. De D-Tuna op de E snaar kan niet afgesteld worden met het kleine zwarte schroefje, want die is dol. Daarmee is de D-Tuna meteen waardeloos. Gelulkkig helpt Thomann door een nieuw schroefje te sturen. Men wist me te vertellen dat dit probleem momenteel vaker voorkomt. Ik heb meerder gitaren met een D-Tuna en het valt op dat die schroefjes 2x zo lang zijn... Mogelijk is deze D-Tuna een soort OEM product, maar dat zou wel gek zijn op een EVH gitaar...

Lang verhaal kort: op papier en visueel en hele vette gitaar, maar eigenlijk niet het geld en de wachttijd waard zoals hij afgeleverd wordt. Ik hou mijn exemplaar en ga hem zelf opwaarderen.
